Interview Tips

  • Invest time into preparing for the interview.  It is so important that you learn about the company.  Be prepared to talk about recent press releases, Executive management, VC investors, product and market positioning, and competitors.  If you think you can wing it during the interview or call, your level of success of moving to the next stages falls below 25%.
  • Be on time for the interview.  Most HR managers will judge a candidate on this factor alone.  Don’t take the interview out of your hands by simply being late!
  • If you have an emergency, CALL your recruiter ASAP.  He / she will contact their client.  Your recruiter has the relationship and it will come off professionally if they advise them your running late.
  • Dress in a professional manner.  Most people think they can figure someone out in the first 10 mins of meeting and clearly they only can do that by the first impression you make.
  • Be clear and confident, but never cocky or arrogant.  Remember there will always be people you compete with and that person maybe your future boss.
  • Clearly relate your skills and experience to the interviewer.  Always ask questions to be certain that they understand your value and accomplishments.
  • Stay relevant and on task.  Doing so, you show respect for their time and being considerate of the interview process.
  • ACTIVELY LISTEN - can't emphasize this one enough!  An interview goes both ways however; setting you apart from other candidates is the goal of any successful interview. Ask for clarification if needed, never cut off the interviewer and let them know your listening by using the informative questions.
  • Prepare a list of questions and keep them close to you.  Should you nervous, you will be able to refer to your notes and help you stay on track. Use positive language
  • Don't lose your focus over questions that have little meaning.  Help the interviewer stay focused on your skills, experiences and accomplishments.  Remember, not everyone you interview with will have the same level of experience interviewing people.
  • Be honest - about your experience, strengths, weaknesses, etc.
